Now that Brexit has been delivered, Boris Johnson has decided to start building bridges. Literally. ‘New infrastructure is going to be at the heart of No 10’s agenda,’ says a Government insider, ‘and a big part of that is going to be building new bridges.

‘Everywhere there is a major river without a bridge, we’re going to construct one. It’s a way of improving transport connectivity, but crucially, it’s also a way of securing the future of the British steel industry. That’s why HS2 is going to get the go-ahead, and we’re going to start reversing the Beeching rail cuts.’

I’m told Boris Bridges are part of a ten-year strategy for enshrining the PM’s political legacy. ‘Our rule is going to be “do something they can see”. The view is Labour’s nowhere, so we’ve got the time. Sajid Javid is terrified of being given the chop, so he’s going to sign off on spending. And it means we can really start building the foundations in those Labour seats we won in December.’
