Do You Know the Law – Ref CCTV

News that Social Media Whittlesey have formed a Whittlesey CCTV Watch.

(Not to be confused and NOT associated with Neighbourhood Watch).

I am supportive of anything which can and will deter criminal activity, but there are rules and regulations around the use and installation of CCTV.

Most ‘sellers’ do not inform their customers of the rules as in some cases a license is required from the ICO
(Information Commissioners Office)

From 25 May 2018, people who use CCTV for domestic purposes, ie to monitor their property, even if it films beyond the boundaries of their property will be exempt from paying a fee under data protection law.

To see whether you are required to register and obtain a license go to the ICO website:-

https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/data-protection-fee/self-assessment/

I have CCTV at my home, professionally installed and have done the self assessment through the link above, and as in the majority of domestic CCTV I am NOT required to register or pay a fee for my CCTV system.
